Michal Zátorský: "Real fatigue is psychological — it's in our head"

Most people talk about training. Very few have lived it at the highest level. Michal Zátorský comes from Slovakia, built through over 300 fights, multiple national titles, and competition on a European and world stage. Not theory. Not trends. Experience under pressure — and now he passes that on.

In a fight, you can't quit when it gets hard. What mindset from fighting translates best to endurance racing?

Very simple answer: never give up.

You're used to short, intense bursts. How would you mentally approach something like a 10+ hour race?

I would definitely plan the entire race in advance. Every detail matters, such as the weather, wind, and terrain.

What does "real fatigue" mean to you and how should endurance athletes redefine their limits?

Fatigue hurts, the body takes a beating, and the brain signals that something isn't right — but our mindset and mental strength can't allow us to leave the mission unfinished. Even when it hurts, you have to keep going.

In extreme endurance performance: what matters more in preparation — capacity or mental resilience? Why?

Real fatigue, in my opinion, is psychological — it's in our head. As long as nothing is broken, I can keep fighting. Even if you do break something, instinct kicks in. In the past, I broke my right thumb and still won the fight with one hand.

In fighting, pacing can decide the outcome. What can endurance athletes learn from how fighters manage energy?

You need to know how to distribute your energy — that's what strategy is. If you're well-trained, it's simple.

If an endurance athlete wants to become mentally tougher: what would you steal from fight training and apply immediately?

Train in combat sports and educate yourself in the field.
